Mike Pickles will spend an hour on Saturday afternoon signing copies of his new book at Yellowknife Books. The title may need a little unpacking. Then again, it may not.
In many respects, Pickles said, his book does what its title would suggest. That title is: Cats Have Nine Lives – You’ve Got One, So Listen Up.
“There are nine chapters and each is based on a quality or a trait of a cat,” Pickles told Cabin Radio of his seventh book to date.
“For example, chapter one, it says land on your feet and bounce back. Cats, right? You drop them, they land on their feet. So us as human beings, if we can have that mentality – we all go through hardships in life, but if you can just bounce back, land on your feet – and then every chapter is the same thing.”
Chapter three, building on this theme, is “snooze control, the secret fuel of champions.”

Pickles said 30 years as a teacher has shown him that everyone “just needs a little inspiration, a little motivation.”
“These books are all about trying to get people to be a little bit better than they were yesterday,” he said.
“Number one, anything’s possible. Number two, it doesn’t really matter where you start in life. It’s where you finish, or how you finish.”
Pickles ultimately hopes to complete a six-book series, Map Your Rise, playing on his name – his initials are MAP – but also standing for mindset, action and purpose (or process, or principle).
“By the time they finish all six,” he said of prospective readers, “their life will be magical.”
Saturday’s book signing runs from 1-2pm.
