Late former NWT commissioner Tony Whitford will receive a state memorial service at the territory’s legislature on Saturday. You can also watch online.

A three-term MLA, Tony went on to serve as the territory’s commissioner from 2005 to 2010.

The commissioner takes on various ceremonial roles, oversees the assent of legislation in the territory and holds formal responsibility for a range of appointments.

Tony’s death at the age of 83 was announced in September. At the time, Speaker of the House Shane Thompson said his legacy was “woven into the very fabric” of the legislature.

The building will host a memorial service from 2pm on Saturday.

“Please join the family on Saturday, October 19 at 2pm in the Great Hall at the NWT legislative building in Yellowknife to celebrate and remember the life of Tony Whitford,” read a notice issued by his family.

The service is public. The auditorium at the neighbouring Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre will be opened to accommodate people attending in person if the legislature’s Great Hall reaches capacity.

People who cannot be there in person will be able to watch the service via Zoom.
