The federal government confirmed on Thursday it is sending the Northwest Territories an extra $1 million over two years to help “those facing unsheltered homelessness in Yellowknife.”

More than $600,000 of that sum has already been earmarked for a new on-the-land camp established this winter on the Ingraham Trail.

The camp – a temporary 10-week program – has a capacity of about 30 people and is designed to provide an alternative to overcrowded shelters or urban encampments during the coldest months.

The rest of the money will be used to “work on increasing transitional and supportive housing options for individuals at risk of homelessness and/or exiting homelessness across the territory,” Ottawa said in a news release.

The federal government said the GNWT had agreed to match its $1-million investment.

This isn’t the only money being targeted at homelessness in the NWT. Instead, it’s a limited funding increase that Premier RJ Simpson said “provides not only immediate shelter but also essential support services that can help individuals work towards stability and independence.”
