The ice road connecting Dettah and Yellowknife has opened to light traffic, the territorial government said on Saturday.

The Department of Infrastructure said on Facebook the road is open to vehicles weighing under 5,000 kg.

According to GNWT records, Saturday – December 21, 2024 – marks the road’s earliest opening date since 2014, when it opened on December 19.

In the ensuing decade, the road has mostly opened in early January with a couple of exceptions. Last year, the road was significantly delayed and did not open until late January.

Usually, the road across the frozen Yellowknife Bay remains open until mid-April.
