The Tłı̨chǫ Government has signed a deal with an Australian mining group regarding exploration on Tłı̨chǫ lands.
Under the terms of the deal, Fortescue will help the Tłı̨chǫ Government “gain a better understanding of the mineral potential” in the region.
The company will also help build the local “knowledge and capacity required to independently undertake geological surveys of Tłı̨chǫ lands going forward.”
“One of the first areas of TG and Fortescue’s focus is an assessment of lithium potential on Tłı̨chǫ lands,” the two stated in a joint news release issued after the CBC had first reported the agreement.
Grand Chief Jackson Lafferty called the deal “a milestone in the development of potential mining opportunities in the Tłı̨chǫ lands.”
The announcement came while many Tłı̨chǫ and NWT politicians and industry representatives are at Roundup, a Vancouver-based mining and exploration conference.
