MLAs have agreed to reappoint Stephen Dunbar as the Northwest Territories’ chief electoral officer for four more years.

Dunbar has been in the role since late 2021.

Prior to that, he was a political advisor to various ministers and the legislature’s director of research and committee advisory services.

The only territory-wide election he has supervised to date, in 2023, took place to the backdrop of a devastating wildfire season that necessitated a delay.

His office recently published its plans leading up to the next territorial election in 2027.

The legislature’s five-person board of management – MLAs Caitlin Cleveland, Caroline Wawzonek, Robert Hawkins, Shane Thompson and Richard Edjericon – said it had determined Dunbar’s “leadership and contributions warranted his reappointment.”

A motion that has the effect of confirming Dunbar’s reappointment passed in the House on Tuesday.
