Arctic Winter Games provides testimony at Alaska hearing on Canada

Leaders of the Arctic Winter Games movement spoke of an “enduring partnership” between the United States and Canada as Alaskan politicians debated Canadian sovereignty.

The Alaska House Resources Committee met last week to discuss a resolution that “opposes restrictive trade measures that would harm the unique relationship between Canada and Alaska.”

US President Donald Trump has led a chaotic move toward tariffs in recent weeks, threatening huge tariffs on Canadian goods, implementing some of them and backing off – at least temporarily – on others.

Some politicians in Alaska say that approach risks significant harm to the US state as well as to Canadian counterparts in the Yukon and beyond.

Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai appeared at the session virtually to praise relations with Alaska, while a delegation from the Arctic Winter Games used the hearing to emphasize “the significance of sports and cultural exchange between Alaska and its Canadian neighbours.”

The last edition of the Arctic Winter Games was held in Alaska’s Mat-Su Valley in 2024. The next edition will be held in Whitehorse in 2026.

The Arctic Winter Games features teams of predominantly youth athletes representing Alaska, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik, northern Alberta, Greenland and the Sámi people of Scandinavia.

“These Games signify more than just athletic competition – they celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the circumpolar north and provide an opportunity for our youth to connect in meaningful ways,” Arctic Winter Games International Committee president John Rodda was quoted as saying.

“These relationships are about friendly competition, collaboration, shared experiences, and the power of cultural exchange. The Arctic Winter Games embody these values and more, and we look forward to continuing this important tradition.”

Whitehorse held a one-year-to-go event earlier this month.

The Yukon capital is stepping in to host the 2026 Arctic Winter Games after Russia’s Yamal region was stripped of the right to stage the event following the Russian invasion of Ukraine – another example of fraying circumpolar relations.

The NWT has formally declined to host the 2028 event, as was anticipated according to a rotating schedule of host jurisdictions, leaving that year’s Arctic Winter Games in limbo.

The event is also having to grapple with the impact of climate change alongside escalating costs and other factors.

The Alaska House resolution recognizes longstanding relations between the US and Canada as well as Canadian sovereignty. It has little formal effect beyond that.

At last week’s debate, Juneau-based broadcaster KTOO reported, not all politicians saw eye to eye on the resolution.

Anchorage Republican Julie Coulombe said she has a “problem” with Canada’s leaders, KTOO reported.

“I want to support that partnership but this is basically running against our own leadership and supporting the leadership of Canada, and that’s not something I’d like to do,” Coulombe said.

Responding, State Representative Chuck Kopp – a Republican from Anchorage and a co-sponsor of the resolution – said: “This isn’t about the leadership of two countries. This is about the people of two countries and standing together.”
