The Yellowknife Community Foundation is creating a fund in memory of the late Darrel Mack to support food security for young people and single parents in the NWT.

Darrel, a member of the Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation, passed away earlier in 2025 after beating the odds to outlive his cancer prognosis by years. A celebration of his life was held earlier this month.

His partner, Leela Gilday, described how Darrel had lived up to her first impression of “this incredible single dad who had really followed this path of integrity.”

In a Friday press release, the Yellowknife Community Foundation said the Darrel Mack Memorial Fund would be a constant reminder of “Darrel’s continuous care for his community.”

“Darrel clearly made a deep impact on his community, and it’s evident how much love he left behind. We’re honoured to help memorialize him through the creation of the Darrel Mack Memorial Fund, and we look forward to supporting young people and single parents with food security once the fund begins granting,” said the foundation’s board chair, Sara Brown.

You can donate to Darrel’s fund through the community foundation’s website.

The foundation said the fund will be managed as an endowment fund, meaning donations will be invested and the annual income from those investments will be awarded to deserving causes.

“This ensures that funds like the Darrel Mack Memorial Fund will endure, carrying Darrel’s legacy far into the future,” the foundation stated.
