West Point First Nation says Devon Felker has been elected as its new chief, receiving 25 votes to Kenneth Cayen’s 13.
A third candidate, Lucille Lafferty, received seven votes according to results published by the First Nation on Thursday evening. West Point has a total registered membership of 94 people according to federal records.
The result will make Felker one of the youngest chiefs in the territory.
“Today’s a good day. I’m chief of West Point First Nation. I appreciate the support,” he wrote on Facebook, sharing another post in which someone writes: “Babe is an insane name, please refer to me as your Tribal Chief.”
Felker, who is in his 20s, has previously served as a councillor and lists his job as the First Nation’s housing coordinator. He was born and raised in Hay River, which is home to West Point First Nation.
“Congratulations Devon Felker on your election as Chief of West Point First Nation,” the First Nation wrote online.
“Wishing you great success as you begin this important journey.”
Shannon Buckley, Kenneth Cayen-Gauthier, Karen Felker and Sonya Frise were acclaimed as councillors.
