Ian Legaree, a leader in NWT sports, recreation and community support who passed away in January this year, will be remembered at a celebration of life on Thursday.
Ian was a pillar of the Yellowknife Community Foundation for decades, a dedicated swimming coach and a central figure in the Arctic Winter Games movement.
He also helped NWT communities with their response to issues like flooding in 2021 and 2022, then wildfires a year later.

“We will share stories, laughter, and memories to honour Ian’s remarkable life and the lasting impact he had on our community,” his family said of Thursday’s event, which begins at the Legislative Assembly at 2pm.
“All who knew him are welcome.”
