Ferries in the NWT’s Dehcho region will implement weight restrictions “in the coming days/weeks,” the territory’s Department of Infrastructure says.
In a normal year, the Highway 1 ferries across the Liard and Mackenzie rivers shut down for the season at the end of October as ice forms. Weight restrictions are introduced in the lead-up to compensate for shifting water levels.
“As seasonal temperatures and water levels continue to decline, ferries in the Dehcho region will be implementing weight restrictions,” the department told Facebook users.
“As conditions change, restrictions can be implemented with little to no notice. We ask residents to keep this in mind when planning their travels.”
The department referred travellers to its Drive NWT website for updates.
That website showed both ferries operating an “intermittent” service on Friday. Fog and smoke have complicated ferry operation in the region in recent days.
