The Salvation Army and Lakeshore Co-op are running a Thanksgiving food hamper drive on Saturday, October 11, followed by a free barbecue.
Food hampers filled with non-perishables will be available priced at $30 for people to purchase for the Salvation Army’s food bank.
The Salvation Army will then distribute the hampers – 600 of them is the goal – to families in need of support over the next few weeks.
The free barbecue runs from 10am until 4pm on the same day as the food drive.
Justin Nelson, the general manager of the Co-op, said Yellowknifers have always been “extremely generous” when the grocery store has hosted food drives.
“They’ve been great at donating. They’ve been great at buying hampers. It’s been something that we’ve been doing for years and years and years, and we are happy to continue to do,” he said.
The Thanksgiving food drive has been running in Yellowknife for more than 20 years, said Tony Brushett, the Salvation Army’s executive director.
“It’s crucial to us to get us through October and November in our food bank before we get into even the busier season with Christmas,” Brushett said.
He added the Christmas kettle fundraiser his organization runs during the holidays always brings in the most money at the Co-op location.
