The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is moving from a full-blown walkout to rotating strike action, meaning delivery of at least some mail will restart.
The change comes into effect on the morning of Saturday, October 11.
Workers had been taking job action like bans on overtime for months but that escalated into a strike when the federal government issued instructions for a “transformation” of Canada Post on September 25.
Those instructions included a plan to gradually end door-to-door mail delivery by the end of the decade, while Canada Post will be given more freedom to close post offices that it believes are no longer needed.
More: How worried should we be that northern post offices might close?
Where rotating strikes will take place first was not immediately clear.
“This will start mail and parcels moving, while continuing our struggle for good collective agreements and a strong public postal service,” the union stated.
“We will continue our fight for strong public services, good jobs, and a sustainable public post office for all Canadians.”
