The trick-or-treaters who braved the wind and ignored the Jays game on Friday were experiencing one of Yellowknife’s warmest Halloweens.

While it wasn’t quite the hottest ever, it was the least cold – meaning the daily low of 1.9C was the mildest ever recorded in the city.

October 31 remained above 0C for the first time since 2014 (the low that day: 0.2C). The only other year in which Yellowknife’s Halloween stayed above freezing, in records stretching back to 1942, was 1992 (also 0.2C).

Last year, with a low of -10C, was far more representative of what Halloween in Yellowknife normally feels like. The coldest-ever Halloween in the city was 1984, with a temperature of -27.3C and wind chill value of -36.

The unusual warmth of this Halloween capped off one of Yellowknife’s hottest Octobers on record.

Averaging the hourly readings at the city’s main Environment Canada weather station, Yellowknife’s mean temperature for October 2025 was 2.36C.

That’s in the city’s all-time top five warmest Octobers behind 1943 (2.8C), 2021 (2.62C) and 1963 (2.46C).

Saturday began November in the same vein. The high of 5.8C made the day Yellowknife’s warmest-ever November 1, beating the previous record for the day of 4.4C set in 1969.
