The NWT’s top baby names for the first half of the decade are in, and Charlotte and Jack are the clear leaders.
To be fair, it’s a small sample size. Of the territory’s approximately 500 or so babies registered each year, many names chosen are unique. Only a small number are popular enough to be chosen multiple times.
Between 2020 and 2025, there were about 14 babies in the NWT named Jack and 12 named Charlotte.
We say “about” because the NWT government doesn’t release all of the data, so it’s not a perfect science.
We asked the GNWT for baby names chosen so far this decade, but names were only released by the territorial government if they were given to two or more babies in one year.
In other words, if there was a year where only one baby was named Jack, that was not included in the data handed to us by the GNWT and so isn’t in this article.
Additionally, the last few birth registrations are also still rolling in for 2025, so that year’s data is not quite complete.
With that out of the way, here are the most-used names in the past six years to the best of our knowledge.
Keep in mind this list does not reflect alternative spellings of names – if parents chose a unique spelling of a popular name, it won’t show up here.
Here’s a recap of the top names:
- 12: Charlotte
- 9: Hazel
- 8: Amelia, Ava, Brooklyn, Elizabeth, Ellie, Emma
- 14: Jack
- 13: Noah
- 12: Lucas
- 10: Liam, Theodore, William

While the NWT’s naming trends seem to generally reflect the rest of the country (see our many Theodores and Theos this year), there were a few top names in the NWT that didn’t make Canada’s top list, such as Melody, Astrid and Maci.
Ares, given to two girls this year, particularly stands out. Eight girls received the name in Canada in 2019 – but there were none before or after that, until now.
