Naka Power and the NWT Power Corporation are asking for the public’s input as they develop a plan on the future of electricity in the territory.

The NWT government issued new direction to the Public Utilities Board, or PUB, in April 2025 with the aim of increasing renewable energy generation in the territory among other policy changes.

That included requiring the board and public utilities to develop a long-term integrated power systems plan, which will guide how electricity is supplied, generated, used and managed in the territory over the next 20 years.

Naka Power and NTPC, with the support of the territorial government, have now opened a survey to help inform that work.

The survey asks people about their biggest concerns and priorities when it comes to electricity in their community, among other questions.

“Public engagement on an integrated power system plan will help ensure that all voices have the opportunity to be heard as utilities, government and the PUB work together to develop an affordable, reliable and low emission energy future,” stated Cory Strang, chief executive officer of NTPC.

Naka and NTPC said they also plan to speak with community leaders at the NWT Association of Communities annual general meeting set to take place in Yellowknife this week. The organizations said they will engage with Indigenous governments in the spring.
