The NWT government has opened applications for a federally backed program that helps the likes of Indigenous and community governments fund projects that reduce emissions.

The cash, from the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund, “helps eligible organizations plan and deliver practical energy projects that lower emissions, reduce fuel use, and support more affordable and reliable energy in NWT communities,” the GNWT stated in a news release.

Projects could include the likes of energy retrofits, biomass heating, methane capture or electric vehicle charging.

Indigenous governments and organizations, community governments and public agencies can apply. Individual homeowners can’t apply directly but could approach their local government about a particular project.

The GNWT said projects must have a minimum total cost of $100,000. The funding can cover 25 to 75 percent of eligible costs.

Applications are open throughout the year. Submissions will be evaluated quarterly, with the first round of evaluations beginning on June 30.

Apply via the GNWT’s website.
