Dozens of auction items to help fund Hay River schools will be central to the town’s Community Spirit Awards this weekend.
Attendees at Saturday’s awards gala will have the chance to bid on everything from a one-minute shopping spree at Ring’s Pharmacy to a Filipino dinner for eight or fish and chips for 30 people.
“You can learn to drive your own dog sledding team,” said Lana Nason, a member of the auction’s organizing team, listing a few of her own highlights.
“We also have a really cool Hay River artist earring package – some beautiful moose hide tufted earrings and beaded earrings, all made by our local artists.”
You can see more of the items in a Facebook group dedicated to the auction. Proceeds will be split between the parent action committees of the town’s schools.
The auction was held more frequently prior to the pandemic and previously helped a local play school, Nason said, before that play school shut down.
“This is us bringing the event back,” she said, adding an auctioneer is coming in to sell off items on the night.
Tickets to the awards gala at which the auction takes place are available at Ring’s or Home Hardware.
“Every bit of profit that we make from our event is going to be split evenly between the schools of Hay River,” said Nason.
“We’re not expecting people to spend out of their means, but it would be great to get as much as we could for our schools, because they definitely need it.”
