RCMP say four Behchokǫ̀ residents and one person from Wekweètı̀ face a range of charges after a police operation that locked down Behchokǫ̀ for most of last Friday.

In a Monday news release, police said Steven Lafferty, Jay Ayah, Keegan Mackenzie, and Tyler Sage of Behchokǫ̀, as well as Daniel Wedawin of Wekweètı̀, are collectively charged with 22 offences. (While police gave Wedawin’s community as Wekweètı̀, his social media accounts suggest he has ties to Gamètì.)

Schools in the community were locked down for some nine hours on May 1 as police pursued “armed individuals” following reports of shots fired in what officers suggested had been a targeted attack.

Charges laid against the five include assault with a weapon, robbery with a firearm, extortion with a firearm and other gun-related offences.

All five have been remanded into custody, RCMP said on Monday.
