Former Nunakput MLA Herb Nakimayak will be the Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada president for the next four years after winning an election on Tuesday.
Nakimayak defeated Kilikvak Kabloona in a head-to-head contest.
He previously had spells as the organization’s vice-president for international affairs and was appointed interim president last year. Kabloona was Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated’s first female CEO and Nunavut’s Liberal candidate in the 2025 federal election.
ICC Canada did not publish the provisional result in full. The CBC, which was in attendance at the vote in Iqaluit, said Nakimayak had won by 11 votes to two.
Representatives of ICC Canada’s members, delegates selected by those members and a vice-president were able to vote.

Iqaluit is hosting the 15th Inuit Circumpolar Council General Assembly this week.
