Yellowknife band Gnarwhal says frontman Mark Kilbride is recovering after suffering a stroke while on tour in British Columbia earlier this month.

The group has become one of the city’s most successful musical exports, releasing a new album earlier this year and being nominated for metal artist of the year at this year’s Western Canadian Music Awards.

In a message to fans late on Monday, the band said Kilbride is “recovering and taking the time he needs to focus on his health and family.”

“We’re giving him all the time and space he needs to get healthy and get back to doing what he loves,” the band stated.

In the meantime, Gnarwhal will continue playing events. “We’re going to bring you the best Gnarwhal we possibly can without our guy up front, and honestly, Mark wouldn’t want it any other way,” the band wrote.

“Mark is our brother and the heartbeat of this band. We’re holding down the fort until his glorious return, and doing our best not to screw anything up too badly while he’s gone.”
