Inuvik’s hospital entered a lockdown on Monday morning, though the threat involved was not immediately clear and police said they hadn’t recommended one.
The town’s mayor, Peter Clarkson, told Cabin Radio at 9:20am that RCMP had advised him no active shooter was involved, contrary to some social media posts circulating in the community.
The health authority said residents should only head to the hospital in a medical emergency.
A senior educator at Inuvik’s East Three school said no lockdown at its facilities had occurred. A spokesperson for RCMP’s Inuvik detachment said police in the town had not called for any action to be taken.
“We did not at any time issue a lockdown,” the spokesperson said.

RCMP in the town are, however, investigating a serious incident, the spokesperson added without elaborating. When that incident took place was not stated. More information was expected to be released later on Monday.
In a statement at 10am on Monday, the Town of Inuvik said there had been “an incident in the community this morning” but stressed there was no shelter-in-place or lockdown.
