A “drop and go” downtown Yellowknife recycling station – housed in a seacan – is being considered for final approval by city planners.
The NWT government’s housing agency is hoping to open the station at the end of 51 Street, beside the Aspen Apartments public housing complex, as part of plans to expand the GNWT’sbeverage container recycling program.
The application has already come through a public hearing as it required a zoning bylaw amendment. City planners are now evaluating Housing NWT’s application.
People have until the end of September 23 to provide comments.
The recycling station would consist of a modified seacan with a kiosk that allows customers to enter their Bottle Shop Recycling Depot account information and temporarily unlock a chute door to enable drop-off.

Housing NWT’s proposal includes security cameras, solar panels, an emergency exit chute door that can be opened if someone climbs inside the seacan, and three parking stalls.
The territory says the recycling station will reduce the need for people to travel to the uptown Bottle Shop and could increase the number of containers recycled.
