The Inuvik branch of the Royal Canadian Legion pinned a poppy on the town’s mayor last weekend to begin the 2026 campaign of remembrance and support for veterans and their families.
By email, Legion communications and promotions officer Anick Jenks said the local branch expects “much support for the CFB Wainwright tragedy will come from this fund.” Poppy boxes will appear throughout the community until Remembrance Day, November 11.
Across Canada, the Royal Canadian Legion is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
Inuvik will host two ceremonies in November: alongside a Remembrance Day ceremony, Jenks said, a commemoration ceremony for Cpl Jordan Anderson will take place.
Cpl Anderson was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan in 2007. His family lived in Inuvik.
At 5:30pm on Tuesday, November 3, his father will attend as the Legion unveils a plaque at a road named in Anderson’s honour next to Inuvik’s airport and forward operating location.
