The Town of Inuvik says engineers and contractors have identified the cause of a leak that forced the swimming pool to shut down in June.

Acting senior administrator Cynthia Pihlaja said a repair plan is now ready for the pool at the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex after staff conducted an assessment that confirmed its structural integrity.

“We are currently coordinating the repairs with the engineers, pool experts and local contractors to repair the leak,” Pihlaja said on Friday.

She said there is no definitive reopening date, “given the coordination of contractors and material acquisition, as well as any unknown factors.”

The town announced the pool’s latest closure on June 11, stating maintenance checks had uncovered “significant concerns” with its foundation. After the pool was drained, engineers from Aecom spent time trying to find the exact location of the leak.

Once the leak is repaired, the pool liner will be reinstalled followed by tests to ensure the repairs hold.

“If all goes to plan, it should be reopened in the fall,” Pihlaja added.

The town’s pool has been beset by problems for the past four years.

It closed at the onset of Covid-19 in March 2020, then remained out of action when town staff decided to seize the opportunity and begin a “major overhaul” in October that year.

Leaking pipes and a shifting concrete foundation had been identified, the town said in 2021 as work continued. The pool eventually reopened in 2023, but then closed again briefly when the town realized some of its sealant was sticking to swimmers.
