The Town of Inuvik has once again shuttered its swimming pool indefinitely, this time describing a “significant concern with the pool foundation.”

In a Tuesday afternoon update, the town said the pool at the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex would need to be immediately drained and a “comprehensive assessment” carried out.

The fault was identified during routine maintenance, the town stated.

“Our team is working diligently to mitigate further damage, ensure the safety of staff and users and minimize the impact of the closure for user groups and sponsors,” read the town’s notice.

“We understand that the pool is a cherished community amenity, and we are committed to restoring it as quickly as possible while ensuring all safety standards prior to resuming operations.”

There is no firm reopening date.

The town’s pool has already come through years of issues.

It closed at the onset of Covid-19 in March 2020, then remained out of action when town staff decided to seize the opportunity and begin a “major overhaul” in October that year.

Leaking pipes and a shifting concrete foundation had been identified, the town said in 2021 as work continued. The pool eventually reopened in 2023, but then closed again briefly when the town realized some of its sealant was sticking to swimmers.
