Yellowknife group Cold Fusion will play a Saturday night set that meshes their music with an old-school light show.
Andrew Jossa, one of the group’s members, said the Cold Fusion Psychedelia show will feature the projection of liquid light – bowls of water filled with oil dyes – to create “beautiful, swirling colour visuals” in a manner that harks back to experimental bands of the 1960s and 1970s.
“The liquid light thing is a very old technique. All these bands like Pink Floyd and Jefferson Airplane were using live liquid light visuals for that psychedelic flair,” Jossa told Cabin Radio.
“But it’s not being done too often these days, and that is part of what makes it so appealing. It’s a little bit unique and hasn’t been done in Yellowknife recently.
“There’s something so appealing about these analog effects in today’s world, where everyone’s all about AI and all of that. There are things about these very old techniques that you just can’t replicate any other way.”
Sami Blanco will run the live visuals for the September 27 show, which takes place at Yellowknife’s Top Knight bar from 8-11pm. Doors are at 7pm and entry is $30 on the door.
You can see examples of the light technique on the band’s Instagram page.
Jossa, Pat Braden, Norm Glowach and Tyler Hawkins form Cold Fusion.
“We play music that’s a little more out there, a little bit of jazz fusion, some elements of rock and funk and soul,” said Jossa.
He called the combination of the band’s music and the light show “by far our most ambitious thing yet.” It’ll also include interpretive dance from Fia Grogono.
“Bring open ears and an open mind,” Jossa said.
