The NWT’s Department of Infrastructure says the ice road connecting Yellowknife and Dettah has opened to light traffic for the 2025-26 season.
A Monday, December 22 opening – announced by the department on Facebook – means the ice road is arriving early by recent standards. Last year’s opening date of December 21 was the earliest in a decade.
The year before, however, the road didn’t open till late January.

This year, a lack of snow and recent cold weather were each said to have contributed to good road construction conditions.
The road generally stays open until early to mid-April.
