Some Yellowknifers will travel back in time later this month by parking between the city’s fieldhouse and multiplex, ideally with snacks and a comfy pillow.

For $30 per vehicle (or $15 per walk-in), organizers were offering the chance to head back to the late 1990s and early 2000s with a drive-in movie double bill.

However, drive-in tickets sold out even as the city issued a press release advertising the event on Wednesday, meaning walk-in tickets – where you can head to a designated car-free viewing area – are the only option available.

Western Arctic Moving Pictures, or Wamp, is partnering with the City of Yellowknife to offer Lilo & Stitch (2002) and The Fifth Element (1997) for the movie night on Friday, August 30.

The screenings begin at 8:30pm. Gates open at 7pm. Kids aged 12 and under get in as walk-ins for free if accompanied by an adult.

Drive-in movies have been a thing again in Yellowknife since the opening months of the pandemic, when they became one of the few ways for people to gather and share an experience while public health restrictions were in place.
