RCMP have named the suspect in Saturday’s fatal Fort Providence shootings, saying he is charged with murder and attempted murder but remains at large.
Police identified the suspect as a 22-year-old from Surrey, BC named Krystian Cogswell.
“Cogswell remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. A Canada-wide warrant for Cogswell’s arrest has been issued and investigators are actively seeking to locate him,” RCMP stated on Wednesday afternoon.
“The investigation to date shows that Cogswell fled Fort Providence after the shooting and has likely made his way to points south of the territory.”
A 31-year-old man was killed in Saturday’s incident, which RCMP say took place just before 1am that day. One other man was transported to the health centre for treatment while a third was medevaced to Yellowknife.
Cogswell is charged with two counts of aggravated assault alongside murder and attempted murder. Those charges have not been tested in court.
“Cogswell is also wanted on a separate warrant from the Inuvik RCMP detachment in connection with drug trafficking offences from July of 2024,” police stated.
“At the time of this incident, Cogswell was subject to bail conditions that required him to reside in British Columbia and not to be present in the Northwest Territories.”
Police asked anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact their local police station or RCMP detachment or submit a tip via Crime Stoppers.
